12. Defending American Values - Banning Torture
President Obama, One of the first executive orders that you issued when you assumed office was to end the use of Torture. You had promised us during the campaign and you kept the promise.
Thank you
Americans have lost lives fighting for our values. We did that in multiple armed conflicts as well as in terrorist attacks such as Sep 11. Republicans believe torturing prisoners when they potentially can give us critical information is part of American values. I disagree. It is not just against our values, it is also ineffective. Under Republican torture regime, we were never able to get Osama. We can also see the same ineffectiveness of intelligence in the case of Gilad Shalit. We can fight terrorism without sacrificing our core values. When who we are at our core is changed by acts of terrorists, we lose. Republican policies drafted based on emotional response to TV shows such as 24 makes us smaller than who we are.
Thank you for standing up for American values. While there are still many areas where i believe you are wrong, especially in cases where you have authorized killing American citizens without the benefit of due process, I thank you for moving the country in the right direction. |

Congressman Broun has an explanation on why he said embryology, Big Bang and evolution are all big lies. He was off the record. You see, that view was for a different set of observers.
Based on this i feel, i may have to tone down my objection to the Congressman. You see he has gone straight from denying science to quantum mechanics, specifically a misunderstanding of the uncertainty principle. The claim is that the act of observation (off the record or in public) will impact the variable that is being observed, in this case his views about science itself. It is probably too much to ask a Congressman not to be confused by something that Heisenberg himself was at one point in time, especially when the Congressman is making some self-referential assertions.
But i am still thankful that President Obama is leading the country, and hopeful that he will continue to do so for the next four years.

It was always confusing when Mitt kept saying he is going to beat China, him being the guy who pioneered outsourcing jobs there. Now i get it. What he means is that Chinese kids are going to keep studying science as it is generally accepted, Republicans are going to take a new revolutionary approach to science, going back to first principles as laid out in the "manufacturers' handbook".
Imagine a scientific discussion between a Chinese kid and an American kid in this brave new world.
I am thankful that you are the President, Mr Obama, and am hopeful that you will be for the next four years. |

Mr President, when you decided to choose the Lily Ledbetter Fair pay act as the first legislation that you signed into law, it was heartening. The act makes it easier for women to challenge discrimination in the workplace. Courts couldnt help resolve the issue with the current set of laws and corporate interests had made it difficult for women to challenge unequal pay. Republicans of course criticized you for adding regulations and not allowing them to do what they wanted.
Your opponent Mitt Romney was asked whether he supports the act. His response not surprisingly was "Sam, we’ll get back to you on that.”
Thank you for standing with your convictions and standing with women. |

Well....the bottom is people are going to vote with their wallet come November, they always do. It is a VERY hard sell to the average America to ask them to be patient (us Americans be patient...yeah right) and buy the fact that we are recovering and that policies that were put in place saved us from falling into the economical abyss and are steady albeit slow in getting us back off the cliff. I likened it to all of us financially clinging to the cliff by our fingertips, with one hand, when he took office. Well, we put two hands back on the cliff, pushed our body slowly back on the edge and now we have one knee on the edge and slowly lifting the other one up over it.
But alas the thing I fear the most is the Dem base, young voters, Hispanics saying "awww....fuck it, my vote doesn't mean shit this time around" and staying home.
People will vote money money money over social issues and foreign policy all day, that is just the way it is. I am willing to bet that a majority of us Americans would be more than willing to sacrifice legislation for affordable healthcare, gay and lesbian rights, women's rights, and foreign policy as long as they are working and getting paid regularly.

1-10: A beautiful list, and I like not just the explanations, but the order, including placing Justice Sotomayor, which may be one of his most lasting and significant accomplishments.
I would add thanks for the reflections Obama has offered the country at moments of tragedy, such as the murders in Arizona and Colorado, when he called upon the country to do some "soul-searching," and helped exemplify how to do it.
I would also add something to the list that came before he was elected President: I think his Speech on Race from March 2008 will go down as a classic speech in American political oratory. in a tradition that includes Jefferson's Declaration, Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and Second Inaugural, FDR's 1st and 2nd Inaugural, and the speeches of Martin Luther King Jr. The cool thing is that Obama is the primary author of this major political speeches. He does not depend on a ghost writer for his words. |

Acknowledging something that is too often forgotten. When BP accepted responsibility for the Gulf Oil Spill, President Obama demanded...and got...20 billion dollars in cleanup money. In comparison, Exxon has been charged 500 million dollars for the Valdez disaster, and still hasn't paid a dime, as they have the judgement tied up in court because of a dispute over interest charges. It should be noted that President Obama secured that money with no promise of it being a complete payment. BP is still on the hook for future monies. The gulf oil spill's effect was minimized by President Obama's leadership.

When times are tough, constant conflict may be good politics but in the real world, cooperation works better. After all, nobody’s right all the time, and a broken clock is right twice a day. All of us are destined to live our lives between those two extremes. Unfortunately, the faction that now dominates the Republican Party doesn’t see it that way. They think government is the enemy, and compromise is weakness. One of the main reasons America should re-elect President Obama is that he is still committed to cooperation. He appointed Republican Secretaries of Defense, the Army and Transportation. He appointed a Vice President who ran against him in 2008, and trusted him to oversee the successful end of the war in Iraq and the implementation of the recovery act. And Joe Biden did a great job with both. He appointed Cabinet members who supported Hillary in the primaries. Heck, he even appointed Hillary!

Dear President Obama,
Republican Governors in various states have been tried to purge voter rolls of minorities and young people because they believe these groups do not vote for them usually (they are right of course). I had raised this issue earlier this year in January and am deeply disturbed that your administration has done pretty much nothing about it and we have an election in less than 3 months.
The issue has reached a state where even Fox News people have started murmuring about how GOP is trying to keep Democrats from voting http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/08/03/gop-fictional-voter-fraud-charges-aim-to-keeping-democrats-from-voting/

Dear President Obama, here is yet another opportunity for you to congratulate your opponent.
As a SuperPAC (which obviously has nothing to do with you according to Justice Roberts)pointed out, vulture capitalism does have collateral damage http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Nj70XqOxptU (The ad is of course not fair, because it only talks about one side. What about the management fees that Bain was able to get before closing down the plant? What about the value of real estate? Dont these people understand how vulture capitalism works?)
Defending against these attacks, you opponent's team has rightly pointed out that if they were living in MA where there was mandated universal coverage that Romney implemented, the lady would have gotten coverage.
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0812/79482.html
“To that point, if people had been in Massachusetts, under Governor Romney’s health care plan, they would have had health care,”
This is the strongest endorsement yet of Obamacare from Romney. Please give him a call.
And do sympathise on Rafalca and ask him to look at the positive side - it didnt insult the Brits |

President Obama, here is another request for positivity in the campaign.
Mitt Romney said this in Israel yesterday
"Do you realize what health care spending is as a percentage of the G.D.P. in Israel? Eight percent” . You spend eight percent of G.D.P. on health care. You’re a pretty healthy nation. We spend 18 percent of our G.D.P. on health care, 10 percentage points more. That gap, that 10 percent cost, compare that with the size of our military — our military which is 4 percent, 4 percent. Our gap with Israel is 10 points of G.D.P. We have to find ways — not just to provide health care to more people, but to find ways to fund and manage our health care costs.”
Please call him and congratulate him and thank him for the following
1. Mitt Romney is being very brave when he praises Universal Healthcare like this after taking pains to distance himself from the template that you used for ACA. Thank him for ackowledging that Universal Healthcare is the way to control costs. 2. No Republican has yet publicly traded-off military spending with a social good such as healthcare. If you do it, Fox News would be publishing proof based on genealogy records showing how you are the direct descendent of the illegitimate daughter that Karl Marx had with a gay Kenyan. |

Now, i would like to make a few requests, before restarting your list of accomplishments.
While your criticisms of Romney are spot on, I implore you to also acknowledge the positives. I have started another blog to get you the list of accomplishments of Romney, but so far his supporters have only said you are bad (hopefully soon they will find something). I do have an idea for you though.
Mitt Romney has changed the minds of one segment of American electorate that has traditionally been considered very inflexible - Evangelicals.
Just a few years back Evangelicals came out in droves and voted for a second term of GWB, fearing that under Kerry, government may force women to kiss each other. This November they will be lining up to vote for a Mormon. Isnt that a sign of progress that all of us should celebrate? Please come out with ads congratulating Romney on this - you can use the same rendition of America the Beautiful (i know you said his religion is off limits, but that is only about negative stuff like magic underwear - this is a positive development). |

10. Economy
There are many reasons to thank you for your handling of the economy - stock market has recorded 65% gains from the day you took over - inflation and interest rates are under control - Much against the predictions of all right wing economists, the dollar index is at the same level as at the time you took office
For Republican trickle-down economists, the above would be signs of a strong recovering economy and is reason enough to thank you. But what I am thankful for is that people are now instead focusing on some economic indicators that are traditionally associated with the redestributive type economists - Jobs, Gas prices etc. Thank you for changing the debate. That to me is more important in the long term than any Stock Market signalling that the economy has turned a corner.
While on the jobs front, you have done great in comparison to the previous Republican administration, there is a long way to go and people are hurting. I wish you had been less conservative in your approach to this issue. This is also a time for me to pause and switch to the other side of my memos - about my requests - from next post onwards.

9. Affordable Care Act
Thank you Mr President for ACA. While most of the benefits that are highlighted are around preexisting conditions and 50 Million uninsured, I thank you for making the first serious approach to controlling medical costs in this country by any president in the past 50 years. As Buffet rightly pointed out, the high cost of healthcare is one of the key competitive disadvantages that American companies have. We spend around 17% of our GDP compared to 9% of GDP spent by other developed countries for health outcomes that are considered inferior. The previous large change in medical cost that was implemented by the Republican president resulted in increase of hundreds of billions of dollars in deficit, while ACA in contrast is projected to reduce the deficit by hundreds of billions of dollars in a period of 10 years.
The reduction in healthcare expenditure obviously is against the interests of various entities in the system including the insurance companies, pharma companies, doctor's unions etc. Conservative media has maliciously attacked you for standing up for the interests of the country. Thank you

8. Humane approach to immigration issue
Thank you President Obama for acknowledging the human side to the immigration issue. I have been quite disturbed by the vigorous nature of your enforcing the laws as it is today and deporting people tearing up families. At the same time i thank you for coming out forcefully against the Republicans and their "model" law implemented in Arizona. When I hear rhetoric full of hatred even on the house floor from Republicans about anchor babies, i remember Henry Cejudo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T2foW7HqjQ). I know i probably shouldnt but i also get reminded of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bd6KR4QM9CM).
Your opponent Mitt Romney believes the law in Arizona is a good model to follow. He wants to implement "voluntary deportations" that will be result of making life difficult for folks here that they voluntarily decide to get out of the country. There is some success in this approach. Many crimes against undocumented are unreported as they are afraid that cops are going to attack them based on their documentation status rather than go after the criminals. When kids are afraid to report sexual abuse because cops may check their parents' documents, for some of us that is unacceptable. Thank you for standing with us.

Thank you President Obama for your wholehearted support for the idea that science is the way for improving our lives. While Republicans continue to fight against evolution, climate change, stem cell research and many other ideas that are settled from a scientific perspective you have come out clearly that you believe our future is in improving ourselves by incorporating the scientific method.
Fox New and the Republicans went to war with experiments done at LHC that resulted in the discovery of Higgs Boson. I want my kid to grow up in an environment where the Higgs Boson is not feared, but cheerd. Only in that environment will kids be able to compete successfully with scientists in other countries.
In our fight to maintain our global leadership, I believe that supporting and encouraging scientific developments is the most patriotic thing that a President can do. Thank you. |

Thank you President Obama for standing with women on this issue. I did have a tinge of disappointment when Hillary Clinton lost her nomination fight, but you have turned out to be a pretty good approximation on making progress on this issue. Your opponent Mitt Romney wants to shut down Planned Parenthoods. I dont. I will fight it in any way I can, and it means a lot to me when as the President, you come out supporting it. When Mitt Romney couldnt come to the support of a college student who was being bullied by one of his loud mouthed supporters, I appreciated your coming out clearly on her side. Yes, you again showed the courage of conviction in standing against the religious conservatives. Thank you. |

| I'm a registered Democrat in my state, and I hate to say it, if the election were held today I'm afraid Romney would win. Why....doesn't take a rocket scientist...money is power over all, and the economy sucks, and independents will see it as that and decide we need a change. Independents rule over a general election, which is one of the main reasons Obama won in 2008. People wanted a change from Bush/Cheney and they saw McCain/Palin as a carbon copy of that model. Independents currently feel Romney is better capable of fast forwarding the economy than the current administration.....we are a need results ASAP society...and despite Romney feeding us his BS on how he will turn things around....people will feel the need to change their luck and roll the dice with him at the helm. There is NO way in hell the unemployment number will be below 8 % come November, not a chance. If it goes up any higher it is toast for the POTUS, regardless of all the good he is done. |

Thank you, WhyNot, for creating this blog. It sure was getting boring reading the same ol' 7 or 8 posters write the same ol' hate against our President blog after blog after blog after blog. And the name calling...sheesh. Amazing some resort to that even in their 40's and 50's and 60's just because they disagree with you.
Actually I'd like to thank Mitt Romney.
For:
1) Having millions of his money in offshore bank accounts. Never has the American people elected a man to President that keeps most of his fortune in other countries to avoid paying U.S. taxes. Recently the co-founder of Facebook has successfully avoided paying U.S. taxes by renouncing his American citizenship. Everyone has railed on him, including Republicans. But I guess it's okay for Mitt, huh?
2) Wanting to get rid of Planned Parenthood. Women everywhere adhore him so much for that, I'm sure.
3) Not giving any specifics on how he'll replace Obamacare after he's done repealing it. Matter of fact, he's given no specifics at all on pretty much anything that a President should do once in office. The economy, immigration, women's rights, healthcare, jobs, etc, etc. I could go on but you get the picture.
4) For making millions in outsourcing (oops..."offshoring") jobs to other countries while he raked in a fortune. Very American, isn't it? He created jobs, alright.
5) Oh and for hating Obamacare itself. Even though he created it in Massachusetts.
All this and more will assure President Obama a second term.
And the televised debates haven't even started yet. I'm sure more "gaffes" will occur. Can't wait to see 'em.

| Ok, the problem with this health care debate is that it rides on a whole lot of bullshit. This account is based on personal experience. I recently had ACL reconstruction surgery. When I received my statement of benefits from my insurance carrier it stated among things, billed from hospital 35k, paid 9k, you saved 26k. Now that includes such federal inspired things (remember the $900 toilet seats) as $300 crutches and $5000 for recovery room where I stayed lor less than 6 hours before being discharged. There are rtes that the hospitals and doctors agree with the insurance carriers and that way the hospital can bill the poor fool without insurance the full amount and claim a loss even though it is a lot less than what it really is. The whole system is phony. Phony numbers by hospitals, Medicaid etc. so who really knows what the true cost of health care is? I don't. And you should have seen what the physical therapist charged and what they paid! What a scam |
|
| by SPORTFUCKINWIFE on July 1, 2012 |
"If I am forced to purchase a full policy, you don't think that I will use it at every opportunity. If that means going to the emergency room for a cold or going to daily physical therapy for my bad back, then so be it. There is no way that I will pay that much for health insurance and not get the best medical care my tax dollars can afford!"
So what you are saying is that currently you are settling for less than the best Medical services?
You say that like it's a good thing.
And wait a minute, if you can afford to have $10k idly sitting in a bank account to cover your deductible, then your policy will not be based on "tax dollars", but your dollars.
The problem with a $10k deductible policy is that if you are ever really sick, chances are you will not cover your deductible. Without the ACA, if you get sick, you will not have the optio to purchase a lower deductible policy after you are sick. So even if you cover your $10k deductible the first year, what are the chances you will after that, when you've been sick for an extended period.
You would simply become one more medical services consumer who cannot cover your own bills.
All in all, I rather pay for you're coverage through the ACA and your actual medical exenses through skyrocketing medical costs.
If High deductible policies were really financial smart, it would be what most wealthy people have, yet I have never met a rich guy with one.

Admire your chutzpah in taking on the Republicans who won a Presidential election by manipulating the gay rights issue. The Congressional Budget Office which is non partisan (neither Republican or Democrat) calculated that the Affordable Care Act would reduce the budget decifit and create more jobs. This several thousand page document was the result of extensive research on the economics of health care. |

Thank you for closure. Your judgement in taking out bin Laden is something that we have not seen in many years in foreign policy. It was a huge risk, as Republicans, Fox News and Romney would have been gleefully criticizing you if the mission was a failure. It is quite sad that the Republican party could not put up someone with foreign policy acumen remotely close to what you have. Instead they have nominated the guy who criticized you for making the promise to bring bin Laden to justice
The President's job is to be the best commander-in-chief and lead the troops with intelligence and judgement. Thank you for being the only grown up in the room on foreign policy. |

The bottom is that everyone (Dems included) know that the current shape of the ACA is not the perfect solution to the problem that everyone agrees we have with the healthcare system. What the decision did is keep Republicans from effectively killing the issue and do as they have done for years and table it off, sit on their hands, not offer any solutions and hope that the issue goes away...until another Democrat comes along and puts the issue on the table.
Here is an opportunity to refine this law, make it into something everyone can stomach and move forward. For once I would like Eric Cantor and John Boehner to come out and say "Hey guys!! We have a plan, a solution, a bipartisan way to improve the ACA and make it better for everyone" instead of pandering to their base and spouting out how they are going to kill it with a vote for 'symbolic' reasons.
But this has been the Republican in the sand since Obama was elected....Oppose everything he and his administration puts out there, sit on your hands and attempt to work a jedi-mind trick on the American public on how evil and bad he is, regardless of FACTS. They know that there is a broad facet of the American public out there that react to fear and scare tactics as opposed to what is really true, and proven to be fact.

| Just like your reference to the "swing" vote. As for the issue at hand, there are too many flaws in both sides of the argument to be posted in this forum. I love how everyone has now become a constitutional scholar, as a constitutional attorney some of the statements are humorous at best. |

@JADE, once everyone gets on board prices should level off. Furthermore, this bill did not go far enough. There were too many compromises made to get it through. So it is a work in progress. The next step should be in reimbursing policy holders that buy medications abroad. Oh my that will really put the hurt on Pharma, but it's the right thing to do. In the last recession the only industries that weren't affected were Medical and Petro. A puiblic option would also force insurance companies to compete.
@SAVCPL, Oh please, this is only a tax if you don't buy insurance. I am an insurance agent and I see many free loaders that would rather buy a boat than due dilence to society. Remember if you get sick and don't have insurance you will be treated even if you don't pay the bill. The bill gets passed on in higher contracted rates to insurance companies where it is adjusted in higher insurance premiums. In essence the good portion of people who maintain the policies are either very responsible or they have an ailment that needs to be treated, therefore the pricing trend is higher. SAVCPL, were you infering that you don't want to pay taxes and not buy insurance either?
The affordable care act also has a safety net for the poor. Anyone who is 133% ($14,000) above the poverty level qualifies for medicaid and is exempt from the tax once they qualify.
@SPONGEWORTHY, you are absolutly right. In Dade County a 35 yr old single male can buy a $10,000 deductible plan for $71 a month with a reputable carrier (Aetna) or $49 with an HMO clinic. |

Thank you. Republicans, Fox News and Romney exhorted Detroit to go bankrupt. In a society where unregulated free market capitalism still has significant support, you spent your political capital supporting an industry. While Republicans were supportive of wall street bailouts, they fought you when it came to rescuing the American car industry. Thank you for standing up to them. Thank you for standing with Detroit. |

Everyone likes "free" medical care but let's be honest, this is a tax on the middle class for various reasons. We choose to purchase a major medical policy with a $10,000 deductible. This policy costs us about $2000.00/year and we have money saved up to cover our medical expenses. Once Obamacare goes into effect, we will be forced to purchase a full coverage policy at 3-4x the initial cost. That cost is only going to rise as more people take advantage of the medical system and because of the pre-existing conditions rider.
If I am forced to purchase a full policy, you don't think that I will use it at every opportunity. If that means going to the emergency room for a cold or going to daily physical therapy for my bad back, then so be it. There is no way that I will pay that much for health insurance and not get the best medical care my tax dollars can afford! Yes, that in itself will cause medical and insurance costs to skyrocket - hence an even greater tax increase, especially on the poor suckers who choose not to take advange of it. |

| So much misinformation posted by the un-informed. The AHA will get rid of the free-loaders by requiring that EVERYONE puchase healthcare insurance. Today medical care for the uninsured is paid for by anyone who pays taxes. |

"and healthcare is NOT a universal RIGHT. That has to be one of the dumbest thing ever utter on here"
It is in every other shit hole country. How can it be so dumb to state what is th law in just about every other country Sav.
I think you just revealed how little you know about the world.
And it is only a tax on those who are not insured, how is that a tax on the midle class, where the vaxt majority of people are insured?

I am pretty Liberal....but my healthcare insurance almost doubled as soon as this was passed. I am ALL for National Health Care but forcing everyone to have insurance w/o pre-existing conditions makes everyone's rates go up that didn't have pre-existing conditions and that IS a fact.
Also I do not like the alternatives to Obama, but he has continued almost ALL of Bush's ways...corporate bailouts, still fighting in Middle East (whatever happened to the campaign promise to bring the troops home right away?), continued Bush's tax cuts while still spending more than ever before.
I think Bush was one of the worst presidents EVER...but where is the change? Obama sucks!!! and I am in no way a Conservative. In fact, I am a Centrist, pulling towards liberal and libitarian. Here is a link for a test for you to find out what you are http://www.nolanchart.com/survey.php |

Try to explain this, how can you be a conservative, a GOP, and be in this lifestyle? Not talkiing about a fiscal conservative, that is not the true nature of the right wing. That is the ulitmate hypocracy!!! Family values, fucking someone else's wife, that goes hand in hand with being a consevative?
What we do in this lifestyle is our personal business, but when someone starts talkiing shit about liberals, etc, then the WTF HYPOCRITE flag comes up really fast.
And it is apparent that many if not most participants in this lifestyle, as "liberated" as they want to act, really are not.
For personal reasons, I applaud the decision of the SC today, they finally showed some balls.

I find it completely hilarious and hippocritical for soon to be nominated candidate Romney (yes GOP, Mr. Romneycare is your ONLY choice now) to boast about how he is going to repeal the ACA....HA! Here is a thought...how bout coming up with a solution before just saying you are going to kill something, but see...that's GOP politics, oppose everything the Dems throw out there regardless of merit, don't offer any real solutions to obvious problems, and then...critique and sit on your hands, accept the status quo and do NOTHING!

| Supreme Court saw the light; our nation will benefit with Obamacare! I hope this country finally starts on a path to erasing our shameful healthcare status worldwide. It is time the haves (insurance) start to listen with their hearts instead of thier pocket books to those who have not had or cannot get insurance. Healthcare is a universal right! AND it make business sense in the long run. |

I still cannot understand the criticism of Obama after 8 years of Geroge W Bush's follys. Nothing Obama has done is worse than GWB. Nothing. Our economy sucks, we got into wars that we could not win, the bailouts were started by GWB, we lost our National image, and now we have a president that is trying to pick up the pieces left by the bastard Bush. Other than for racists reasons, I can not think of any reason to condemn Obama.
So we get national health care, the only major free country in the world not to have one, the only major free country in the world that allowed its citizens to be raped by insurance and pharmaceutical companies, and people still complain? Certainly what passed today is not perfect, but you can blame the GOP for that. They had a choice, fight Obama politically and try to defeat his plan for national health care, or come up with a better program of NHC that would benefit the average American and not insurance and pharmaceutical companies. They chose to protect the very wealthy.
Fact is fact. Thanks for allowing me to express my views.
