texas hates Thomas Jefferson?

What the hell is going on with our education system, now John Clavin and Thomas Aquinas are more important than Thomas Jefferson and the Enlightenment? Imagine trying to rewrite history and indoctrinate the youth of Texas with this crap. Read the article and be scared of just what the future of education looks like in our country (especially in Texas) where we deny the Enlightenment and words like capitalism because they are anti Church and State separation and feel bad words respectively. Wow. I dread what this generation of Texans will grow up believing.

Woooo, Mrs Nippy and Mrs. Callie would get along quite well and sounds like a real party. The Irish Pub here is about the same for drunks. This morning at 7:00am they were setting up an additional tent where there will be different bands playing and some Irish music as well. I plan on taking the long way home to avoid the crowds, drunks, fights and fun...

I could just imagine being in Ireland, just once to see it happening. Lot's of pictures for sure.

Paddys day in Ireland is like a communal suicide drinking fest and I avoid like the plague. In recent years it has become totally over the top and Dublin City is best avoided unless you like watching people falling over and falling out of every pub legless. I much prefer the civility of a good restaurant and a nice bottle of wine. Wine collecting is a big hobby of mine.
I'm not a fan of Irish music but Mrs Nippy is and set dances once a week with her buddies. She loves the work of Luke Kelly and he even attended our wedding many many moons ago. NOt much of a beer drinker or fisherman anymore, but I would prefer a Sam Adams over Bass anyday...Hope his name isn't on the chopping block too. However, Guinness on draft is a wonderful treat.
Right winged Christians, left winged political correctness, both terminal diseases. I for one am happy to see the big push on the overly liberal agendas in school, who seemed to have complete control for the last 10 years, get pushed back a step or two. Hopefully we can adust to a better balance.

who cares about all these people anyways, and i say that because one, the kids wont remember who they are anyways because unfortunately all these states are focusing more and more on standardized testing, which means 60-70& of the school year is focusing on math, english, and reading, the  rest of the year is waiting for the scores. i didnt learn about history until college. and oh yea how about we stop buying textbooks from the 2-3 textbook companies that has the monolopy on school books in the country

To respond to those who posted so far:

Tony: Yes we do seem to be screwed royally - since Texas does influence the text book purchasing in the entire country.

Goonies: I did not say it was wrong to teach Calvin or Luther or Aquinas - however they were born 200, 200 and 500 years before the Enlightenment and had nothing to do with it. They should definitely be taught but in their appropriate eras accordingly. Medieval philosophy for Aquinas and Reformation for Calvin and Luther, neither events which had any influence on the revolutions on the 1700s. But you are right - totally irresponsible.

Ft Worth: So true. We have 4 kids 22, 17, 14 and 7, and if we decided to let them learn only in school each one would know less about history, science, music and art than the previous one!

Luvz - so true you do get the government that you deserve - note that the votes split perfectly down political parties 10 republicans voted to remove Jefferson and the Enlightenment and 5 democrats voted to keep it.

Which leads me to WeSeek: I am pretty sure that education and politics goes hand in hand - does it not? As we can see by this vote and others like it - they seem to always go along partisan s (Democrats, liberals, lefties, commies, socialists, elitist intelligentsia  or whatever you want to call them vote one way while the Republican, conservatives, rightwing nuts, bible thumpers, fascists all vote the other way) no matter the issue.
It no longer matters if education, health care, poverty, energy, unemployment, etc are important or not, what matters is that you stick by your party.
This vote to change the curriculum to delete crucial figures out of our history as a Nation and to minimize and skip over events like the Enlightenment and instead to focus upon an ideological rather than a factual agenda is not education - it is politics.
Unfortunately, it seems that too many people drink the Kool Aid of their party and don't see this for what it is - politicians of a religious nature trying to force their beliefs as facts in our schools. Religion should be taught at home and church/synagogue/mosque/temple etc and not in our public schools. The argument to include only works if we mean Christian, since these same people would die if we decided religon was to be included and we decided to say "one Nation, under Buddha (Allah, Shiva, etc)." When they say bring religion and prayer back to schools they don't mean that Muslims should be allowed to pray 5 times a day while in school, they mean Christian prayer. As a self confessed Deist and Christian couple, we are still adamantly against prayer in schools or any religion being shown preference. As a famous saying goes "dont' pray in my schools and I won't think in your church."

To accuse of pushing a political question, when the facts are clearly stated that it was voted on purely partisan s is farcical. All things are political. The question is, however, what the hell is going on? When are we going to see things for what they are? A political ideological attempt to make our children ignorant of the facts of even the founding of our nation so that it fits in with their world view. To hell with facts... let's just say Thomas Jefferson and crew were born again Christians that tried to bring Christ into the schools but were stopped by that evil John Adams guy.
What I found really funny and further proof of their ignorance was that they left Voltaire on the list, I would guess that 8 out of the 10 who voted for it (Republicans all) don't even know who he is, otherwise he would have come off the list, too.

So yes it is political and educational - because unfortunately we elect people to make decisions about what students are taught in their schools' curriculum and as usual Texas leads the way in getting it all wrong.

Great posts, Mialegs.  I have no problem with kids learning about John Calvin.  People should know as much as possible about everything.  And Calvin and Luther, etc were extremely significant figures.  But to drive out Thomas Jefferson and the Enlightenment is criminal. The people who pushed this stuff through are irresponsible morons.

One of the problems I see is they are not requiring much history. To graduate you might need 2 history classes. So one will be government and the other will be history. Now you are trying to stuff hundreds of years worth of stuff into a 9 month course. Not only is there not enough room in the book the teacher will skip most of it anyways. My son is in the 10 grade now and they skip all over them books. It seems that the schools only teach you to pass the state required test. If they get any more than that in then its a bonus.

We also have an 8 year old. We read (her and us) on a daily basis. Dont just sit around and assume the schools are teaching your kids everything. 

Oh and we are in Texas. All they are talking about on teh news and stuff is whats getting dropped and added.  It is a shame.

The project of revisionist history-making reminds me of what happens all the time in more totalitarian systems, like the former Soviet Union, China, Egypt, etc. Parts of history that those in power don't like, because it contrasts too strongly with their ideology and story are simply removed from official history. Conservative Catholic scholars have re-written the history of the crusades in order to remove a stain from the history of the Church. The stain remains, it is simply white-washed over via ignorance!

The Left's attempts at multi-culturalism, which I support strongly, have been at times awkward and clumsy. In adding others to the story, they have at times removed important actors to substitute minor players in history. The same is true in literature.

However, the Right's re-writing of American history in a purely ideological fashion is unprecedented. McCarthyism has been vindicated? In what universe? Jefferson and the enlightenment weren't influential in the formation of the young nation's ideals? This is all non-history. These are lies, formed by ideological players attempting to become our overlords.

Joseph Welch said it best, when he said to Sen. McCarthy in 1954:

"You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"

This question seriously must be asked of these religiofascists trying to abscond with education in Texas. Have they no shame? Is there truly no stunt so low that they will not stoop to it, in order to promote their religionism in Texas schools and brainwash schoolchildren?
