Iceland, or the 'Land of Fire and Ice,' is a wonderland of glaciers, volcanoes, hot springs, and more. The Northern Lights is most definitely an experience for the bucket list. With a population of just over 330,000, it is blissfully progressive toward sexuality. In fact, it is such a sexually liberated country that it's easy to find swingers in Iceland.
To some, it may come as a surprise that the country is a strong leader on the world stage in women's rights. As such, it has pretty much closed the illicit sex industry in the past few decades. Stripping, prostitution, and lap dances are banned. However, its reputation leans toward being a sexual oasis despite strict sex laws and short club hours. The cultural dating scene just goes down a little differently than most elsewhere in the world. With women seen as equals of men, they enjoy a chill, sex-positive attitude that allows them to express sexuality straightforward and freely. 'Sex first, talk later' is widely accepted and not considered a big deal at all.
Due to the small populace, the swingers and kink scenes have been thus far operating primarily underground. However, the number of free spirits and consenting adults has been growing lately with leaps and bounds. Swinger parties are held at private homes, mostly for reasons of privacy. And, just like anywhere else, couples and singles in Iceland look to expand their lifestyle adventures together against any odds, with the largest city capital, Reykjavik, being the most active scene.
Sex Toy / Lingerie / Costume Shops
Up until recently, Icelandic adventurous couples and singles mostly resorted to traveling to other countries to get their hands on affordable sex toys. Due to a growing interest in online web shops, intimacy, and sex-toy home parties, a lot more has become available at competitive prices.
Like-minded, consenting adults mostly hook up through websites like SDC.com, which has millions of members worldwide, to find couples and singles in the non-monogamous world. Since Iceland does not yet have active swinger clubs to satisfy swinging habits (and/or any fetish, roleplay, or unrealized BDSM fantasies), many naughty parties and dungeon activities are held in private homes.
Parties & Events
Reykjavic is pretty much the sexiest city for enjoying nightlife hotspots and hooking up with others. The scene in Iceland is fun, inclusive, and without many rules. There are no dress codes to consider or queues to get into any place, and hardly any VIP rooms or entry fees to be paid.
There are very few places — maybe just one or two — that resemble clubs you have come to expect in big cities around the world, like those that offer multiple floors, VIP rooms, adhere to a dress code, etc. Instead, you’ll find that it’s a healthy blend between bars, dance venues, cafés, and restaurants — all within walking distance from one another and usually around the main shopping street called Laugavegur.
Strip Clubs / Lingerie Bars
In 2010, the Icelandic government banned all strip clubs. Hence, it’s illegal for any business to profit from the nudity of its employees. So, there is a solution to everything, and Iceland now offers Lingerie Bars instead. They come with stripper poles and everything. However, these are for the guests to use, and, knowing swingers, they do love to indulge in such activities — showing off their bodies and skills while having fun with it.
Boudoir / Erotic Photography
Coco Chanel once said, “A lady should be two things: classy and fabulous!”
That is exactly how you will feel when you take the plunge and have yourself photographed by a professional eye that knows how to capture you in ways that make you shine. There are a few very good boudoir photographers in Iceland, and with a Game-of-Thrones-like epic landscape, the possibilities for spectacular natural shots are endless.
Fetish / BDSM
Oddly enough, the practice of BDSM was still classified as a ‘disease’ in Iceland before it was finally removed from the Icelandic register of diseases about five years ago. With the 50 Shades of Grey books published just like anywhere else, many vanilla couples in Iceland also started to try out S & M practices with sales of ties, handcuffs, eye masks, and whips becoming increasingly popular.
Sexy Bars / Restaurants
When you wish to have a drink and flirt where the ambiance exudes sexiness and a touch of naughtiness, there are many upscale locales that are great places for dates and to meet and mingle with like-minded couples or singles you potentially wish to hook up with.
You may not exactly find a unicorn or a horny elf, but reindeer steak on the menu is pretty much a sure bet!
Nudity in Iceland
Icelandic people are body-positive, and nudity is not frowned upon — in the appropriate places, of course. There is the wild geothermal nature, with its many steaming hot springs such as the famous Blue Lagoon, the GeoSea Sea Baths, and the Secret Lagoon, to name a few. Between the natural bodies of water and the many public pools, you will have to scrub your everything in the absolute buff before entering the waters for hygienic reasons. Since hot springs are a social activity, these mystical, sacred waters are great places to meet other couples and singles — just remember to swim counterclockwise and keep your voices down. Topless sunbathing is acceptable in most areas.
